The Honorable James J. Carey


Former Chairman, U. S. Federal Maritime Commission

Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. Carey is the Former Chairman of the U. S. Federal Maritime Commission [FMC]. He was appointed to the Commission by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the United States Senate in 1981 to serve as a Commissioner at the FMC.  He was elected by his fellow Commissioners to serve as the agency Vice Chairman in 1983 and reappointed by President Reagan in 1985 and again confirmed by the United States Senate to serve a 2nd term. In 1989, Admiral Carey was appointed by newly elected President George H. W. Bush to serve as Chairman of the FMC, a position he held until 1991.  He is a recipient of the Commissions Highest Award, the Gold Medal for Leadership.

 

Admiral Carey’s military career began in 1961 when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was later selected to attend Officers Candidate School in April of 1962.  He was Commissioned an Ensign in 1962 and reported aboard the U. S. S. Topeka [CLG-8] that same year where he served for two deployments to the South China Sea and Vietnam.  He transitioned to the Naval Reserve in 1966 to pursue a business and national public policy career, yet continued his military service through seven separate navy commands, the last being the 10,500 Member Readiness Command Region SIX at the Washington Navy Yard during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, selected as # 1 in the nation.  He holds four awards of the Legion of Merit and retired after 34 years service in ceremonies at the Washington Navy Yard in October 1994.

 

Admiral Carey currently serves as Chairman of the National Defense Committee in Washington, DC, Chairman of National Defense PAC, National Chairman of The Flag and General Officers’ Network, , and Chairman of the Future Leaders for America Foundation Trustees and their Washington Scholars Internship Program. 

He is also the Former Grand Prior of the Knights Templar Order in the United States, and both the Former Grand Commander and Grand Master of the Knights Templar Order Worldwide.  In addition, he has served as National President of his International College Fraternity, Zeta Psi, National President of the Association of the U. S. Navy, and President for Six Terms of the Reagan Administration Presidential Appointees Organization.

 

He also has been selected for membership in four internationally recognized High-IQ Societies and currently serves and leads many humanitarian and youth leadership-based efforts.  Moreover, James is the President of Business/Government Strategies LLC.
